Snoring in children can be caused by various factors, including:
- Enlarged tonsils and adenoids: When the tonsils and adenoids are swollen or naturally larger, they can obstruct the airway and cause snoring.
- Obesity: Obesity can cause narrowing of the airways and increase the risk of snoring and sleep apnea.
- Congestion: Cold-like symptoms or allergies can cause nasal congestion, which blocks airflow and causes snoring.
- Asthma: An asthma attack can cause partial blockages of the airways, causing snoring.
- Anatomical characteristics: Children with unevenly separated nostrils may have difficulty breathing normally during sleep.
- Environmental factors: Exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (secondhand smoke) as well as poor air quality or excess contaminants may affect breathing.
- Breastfeeding duration: There is a link between shorter breastfeeding duration and snoring in kids, however the exact reason isn't known. During breastfeeding, the upper airway may develop in a way that reduces snoring.
- Genetic factors: Some children may have a genetic predisposition to snoring.
